Skynyrd’s Saturday Night Special: Wood!
The boys in their heyday.
Been listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s KILLER album One More From the Road in the car lately. I mean, come on. One of the best rock bands ever, one of the best albums ever. I’m struck by:
> How good the tunes are.
> How good they sound – how Woody it is.
> How much space there is in the music. Three guitars and a piano. You’ve got space in the music AND every guitar has its own tone. (Also a well-mixed album.)
> How awesome all the leads (and riffs) are. The leads are the kind that you can’t take out and replace with another.
> Ronnie Van Zant = great – and so is everyone in the band.
> How about Artiemus Pyle?! What a sick, sick drummer, man. Listen to that part! The more I listen to my favorite Woody music, the more I’m convinced about two things about drums: the drummer is very good, and the drums are up in the mix.
Here are some versions of this tune, which I’m going to run home and try to work out with a beer…maybe not on top of the amp! Enjoy!

As much as I love my metal Allen Collins was always up there in my book. What a player and what band!
Couldn’t agree with you more. Awesome band, tight, perfectly crafted songs with perfect parts for each musician. Gary Rossington, Allen Rollins and Steve Gaines were a phenomenal trio of axemen. Ed King was no slouch either, but as we know had jumped ship by this point.
Artimus lives nearby and brought a killer band to play at a friend’s birthday party a few years ago. He was real cool, hung out, and told my friend and I all sorts of great Skynyrd stories, about the plane crash, disputes within, and we got lots of pix and autographs. Among the autographs he grabbed my One More From the Road LP, and showed me where his hand was bandaged in the gatefold picture, from some pre-concert scuffle. He had an F350 and vanity license plate that said DRUMYODA.
