Derek’s voice actually sounds better on the recent version. ’77 is certainly a louder, higher energy, more rip-roarin’ rendition. But hey, they were 30-odd years younger then!

That’s interesting, because when I went from 9s to 10s, I felt I have more control over bent notes with the 10s.

I guess it has to do with the way you play.

Could you clarify those settings?

On CUBE 30 there are total 20 markers on each knob, though they are labeled on the panel from 0 to 5 (12 o’clock) to 10. So the label somehow counts each two markers as one.

So, these are 9,5,3
1. while counting the 20 markers?
2. while counting the 10 labeled “virtual” (haha) markers?
3. o’clock settings?

What’s funny is that 1. and 3. are completely opposite. First one is really bass heavy, second bright as hell.

I think the current value of MA’s missing voice is over-stated. Remember, he is in his 50′s as well, and his voice ain’t what it used to be.

This sez alot about Seymour Duncan, the A2P, The A2p-Slash, the Les Paul & Gibson. Basically, the A2P & Les Paul, in the right hands, gave us “Sweet Child” , so clearly, Gibson doesnt own the mojo as much as the McCarty designed guitar and the wonderfully designed pickup. If you listen to Akira Takasaki of Loudness circa Thunder era, youll hear that similar tone: kinda like a crisper JB with more dynamic expression.

I use a Dunc Distortion to approximate his tone, but i believe he was using JBs at the time. And Friedman used either a JB jr or JBJ, as did Al Pitrelli when he joined. But i dont use more than 22 watts. 50 watts tube amps can push alot of air with most any pickup, but i suggest at least alnico 8 or ceramic when rockin smaller combo wattages if you want that minimum DZJUGG in the low string chords.

Good call! I wonder if this rig was used on We Die Young (also on Facelift), cuz when i hear We Die Young, i swear there HAS to be a tube screamer. That tone is tight! He must have been on cloud nine playin that song- killer tone. Also, he uses MotorCity pickups on the new disc.
